AML can also develop in people with previous bone marrow disease which are commonly:

  • Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS): Group of cancers where different bone marrow cells reproduce excessively and have dysplastic (abnormal growth) changes
  • Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN): Blood cancers in which the body makes too many white or red blood cells, or platelets) such as polycythaemia vera, essential thrombocythemia and primary myelofibrosis
