To produce the first CAR, termed a T body, Israeli researcher Zelig Eshhar simply exchanged the variable regions of a TCR with the variable regions of an antibody (see Figure 1.2c). Because an antibody Fab region is so similar to a TCR, this produced a stable protein that was able to recognise its antibody target and then activate the T cell.
