Haematopoiesisis the process by which blood cells develop. It begins with the emergence of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) from the major arteries of a developing embryo, which eventually seed the bone marrow. After birth, a steady ‘pool’ of HSCs from which all blood cells arise is maintained in the bone marrow by the carefully orchestrated regulation of HSC self-renewal and differentiation.
