Chromosome analysis is only required to reach a diagnosis in the following two groups of AML:
- AML, with genetic abnormalities
- AML, not otherwise specified
Because the genetic abnormalities in the other two groups of AML (see below) are so varied, chromosome analysis is not helpful. Their diagnoses can be determined from the patient’s history.
- AML, with myelodysplasia-related changes
- AML due to prior chemotherapy/radiation)
